Things to do in Newcastle on a weekend break

So, you’re in Newcastle for a weekend break, that’s great, but what are you going to do while you’re here? Angelic views

If you’re coming from the south of the city, upon entering you’ll see the Angel of the North which is the city’s most famous sculpture. You can go and admire this beautiful monument whenever you feel like it, and when you’re not doing that you can take a walk around Tyne Bridge, sit by the river and then try the bar with roof terrace.

Historical Newcastle  

Why not bone up Newcastle’s history? If you love to dig out interesting facts about where you’re visiting then Newcastle should unearth some fascinating nuggets of information. There’s the Black Gate and Castle Keep, which between them are the one of the biggest historical attractions of the city. There’s also the Georgian quarter of the city with Grainger Town which is something to admire if you love architecture.


 Newcastle has a thriving nightlife so if you’re looking to go out and party then you won’t be bored and there’ll be plenty to do. There are over 20 bars and pubs throughout the city, and by the Quayside there are even more, with some really nice restaurants with excellent views.


The bridges in Newcastle are definitely worth exploring. Starting with the Gateshead Millennium Bridge which is one of the newest ones in the city, and the High-Level Bridge built by Robert Stephenson is worth seeing too, which was the first in the world to have vehicles and rail. There’s also the Swing Bridge which has a gorgeous riverside area to enjoy. It was opened in the latter half of the 19th century and swings open around four times a week.

Shop till you drop  

If you fancy some shopping then go to The Metro Centre where you’ll find a large shopping area with hundreds of stores. You’ll also find a large IMAX cinema, there’s some children’s play areas and a bowling alley, so there’s something for everyone
