Things to Do in Newcastle: Sporting Activities

You may not necessarily associate sporting activities with the city of Newcastle, but don’t dismiss it out of hand, you’d be surprised. If you’re here and looking for things to do in Newcastle that involve sports, then there are quite a few activities to whet your appetite. We’ve chosen just a few for you so you can make an informed choice of which ones you think are best during your time here.

1) Why not visit Newcastle United at St James’ Park from where you can see the city at its finest? The top of the stadium gives you such beautiful views and you’ll have a guide to help you traverse the walkway that’s 150ft above ground. You’ll be able to take in some of the city’s most impressive landmarks as well as learning so much about this iconic football stadium.

2) Why not test your agility in the Ape Matfen Tree Top Adventure. You can spend time on the zip wires, swings and ladders traversing obstacles and some crossings, testing your physical ability and your sense of adventure. Bring friends family and just enjoy yourself in the outdoors.

3) If you love climbing then Climb Newcastle may be just what you’re looking for. It’s a dedicated indoor climbing centre where you can practice existing skills or learn to climb for the first time. It’s a place where you can relax and unwind and practice your favourite skills without worrying about the weather conditions. It’s easy to find, not far from the City Centre. If you fancy a swim, there’s also a refurbished swimming pool. There’s coaching for those who need it and there’s changing facilities, shop and café.

4) Cullercoats Bike & Kayak. If you like your water sports then try the Cullercoats Bike & Kayak, there’s some great coves and beaches to explore, and they’re only 9 miles outside of Newcastle. There’s lessons too, and you can either try the paddleboard, kayak or a bike even. Whatever it is you want, whether it’s boat or bike, they can fix it for you.

5) The Cycle Hub is a great way of getting your cycling fix if that’s what you like. It’s a bike shop and café in one and it’s situated on the C2C route. This is a cycle route that attracts thousands of riders each year with good reason - it’s one of the most challenging cycle routes in the UK. The shop provides spares should your bike run into difficulties and the café is the place where you get your refreshments, and if you don’t want to use your own bike, hire one of theirs!
